Accessing the NDIS & Plan Management
The NDIS can sometimes feel a little like being trapped in a maze with dead ends, trap doors and secret entrances. This can be especially true if you’re new to the NDIS and the disability sector. Get to know the ins and outs of applying for the NDIS & plan management.
To become an NDIS participant, person with disability needs to meet certain eligibility criteria, including:
Being aged between 9 to 65
Being an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or Protected Special Category Visa holder
Having a permanent and significant disability that affects their ability to function independently
If a person with disability meets these criteria, they can then apply to the NDIS for support.
Once approved, eligible participants will need to attend a plan meeting to discuss their support needs, goals, and plan management preferences.
Top Tip: Remember to bring as much supporting evidence, including medical assessments, reports from specialists, and any other supporting documents to the plan meeting. This can help ensure that participants receive an NDIS plan to support their needs.
Understanding Plan Management
NDIS plans are developed based on an individual's needs and goals, and they outline the supports and services that will be funded by the NDIS. There are three types of plan management options – agency-managed, self-managed, and plan-managed.
1. Agency-Managed
Under this option, the NDIA manages the funds for the participant. The agency pays service providers directly on behalf of the participant, reducing administrative tasks and paperwork. However, participants have limited control over their funding and are restricted to using NDIS registered service providers.
2. Self-Managed
This option is for participants who prefer the most control over their NDIS funding. Participants receive their funds and are responsible for managing their budgets, paying service providers, and keeping track of their spending. Self-managed participants have the freedom to choose any service provider, including those who are not registered with the NDIS.
3. Plan-Managed
Plan management is a hybrid option where participants have more control over their funds than the agency-managed option, while still receiving some assistance in managing their budgets. A plan manager, is responsible for handling the administrative tasks, including paying providers, processing claims, and keeping financial records.
Choosing plan management can offer several benefits for NDIS participants. Plan Management provides flexibility for participants to choose from a wider range of service providers, including those who are not registered with the NDIS. This means participants can engage with providers who align with their goals and preferences.
Plan management also relieves administrative burdens, as the plan manager handles all required paperwork, invoices, and claims. This allows participants to focus on their goals and supports without the added stress of financial management and record-keeping.
With proper knowledge and guidance, NDIS participants can maximise their opportunities for a more fulfilling and supported life.
